Endurance

I’ve heard it said love is a river
that drowns the tender heart
I’ve also heard it said, love is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed

sometimes love is an endless hunger
for love that’s true and sincere like
a flower that blossoms like bougainvillea
and the seed is joy taller than the sky

love is best when night has been too lonely
and the road we tread has been too long
alone in the cold you may think love is only
for the lucky and the noble alone

but true stories are told that we may remember

in winter far beneath the bitter snow
lies the seed that with the sun’s love
will sprout in the spring to become a rose

so a heart in love should endure all

for the heart afraid of breaking
never learns to dance like a dream

afraid of waking never takes the chance

sure, it’s the heart afraid of giving
that won’t receive the warmth it deserves
Grandma once said, the soul afraid of dying
never learns to live forever more
